The Challenge

Securing the perimeter of a commercial industrial yard starts with controlling who and what gets through the gate. This Mississauga facility had a multi-lane driveway with mixed heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic — a combination that demands a gate system capable of managing flow efficiently while maintaining perimeter security. Yellow bollards and pedestrian crossing infrastructure at the site made it clear that both vehicle and pedestrian safety had to be considered in the gate design, not just vehicle throughput.

A cantilever slide gate was the right configuration for this application — the driveway width and traffic volume ruled out swing gate options, and a ground-track slide gate was impractical given the heavy vehicle traffic that would be crossing the track channel daily. The challenge was specifying and installing the right system for the site’s physical layout and operational requirements.

The Solution

Wilcox Door Service installed a bright blue automated cantilever slide gate engineered for the facility’s multi-lane driveway. The cantilever design eliminates the need for a ground track, instead using a counterbalanced rail system that suspends the gate panel and allows it to slide clear of the driveway opening without any ground-level obstruction — critical for maintaining clean vehicle access in a heavy-traffic industrial yard environment.

The gate was specified for the driveway width and vehicle weight classes using the facility, with the automation system configured for the access control requirements of the site. Safety features including loop detectors and safety edges were integrated to protect both vehicle operators and pedestrians using the crossing. The installation was anchored securely to the existing infrastructure with the structural rigour required for a large industrial gate operating under continuous use.

Outcomes

The facility now has automated perimeter access control that handles its mixed traffic volume without ground-track maintenance issues or vehicle clearance problems. The cantilever design has operated cleanly through heavy vehicle cycles without the wear and obstruction issues that ground-track alternatives would have introduced. Perimeter security is maintained consistently, and the access control system integrates with the facility’s broader security infrastructure.
