High-Speed Fabric Door with Vision Panels — Car Wash Facility, Toronto

The Challenge

A Shell car wash facility in Toronto needed a high-speed door for its wash bay entrance — an application where the environmental conditions are severe and the operational requirements are exacting. Car wash bays subject door systems to constant water exposure, chemical cleaning agents from the wash process, vehicle pressure during entry and exit, and the need to cycle rapidly enough that vehicle flow through the bay isn’t restricted by door wait times. Vision panels were a non-negotiable requirement: drivers entering a car wash bay need to see into the bay clearly before committing to entry, and staff managing the operation need visibility through the door from the outside.

The combination of chemical resistance, rapid cycling, vehicle visibility, and water exposure eliminates most standard commercial door products from consideration. What was needed was a purpose-specified product for the car wash environment.

The Solution

Wilcox Door Service supplied and installed a high-speed fabric door with clear PVC vision panels at the Shell car wash bay entrance. The blue fabric curtain with integrated clear panels was specified for the chemical and moisture resistance requirements of a car wash environment — the curtain material handles water impingement and chemical contact without the degradation that affects materials not rated for the application. The clear PVC vision panels provide the driver and operator visibility the application requires, positioned to give clear sight lines into and out of the bay during vehicle approach and exit.

The door’s rapid cycling speed maintains vehicle throughput — critical for a commercial car wash that operates on tight cycle times — and the activation system was configured to integrate with the car wash’s vehicle management and entry control system.

Outcomes

The high-speed door has performed reliably in the car wash environment — handling daily water exposure and chemical contact without curtain degradation or hardware issues. The vision panels provide the driver visibility that makes the car wash entry process safe and intuitive, and the rapid cycling maintains the vehicle throughput the facility requires.
