Sectional Door Installation — Large Automotive Manufacturing Plant, Ontario

The Challenge

A major automotive manufacturer had completed a new Canadian production facility and needed over 60 sectional overhead doors and operators installed across the plant. Projects of this scale require more than just a capable installer — they require a contractor who can coordinate at volume, maintain consistent specification across every opening, stay on schedule in a new-construction environment, and deliver a finished product that will perform reliably under the high cycle demands of automotive manufacturing.

The customer had a specific technical requirement that added complexity: they needed a counter-weighted door system rather than a conventional spring-tensioned setup. Counter-weighted systems eliminate the spring failure risk inherent to torsion or extension spring operators — an important consideration in a high-cycle manufacturing environment where unplanned downtime has direct production cost implications.

The Solution

Wilcox Door Service managed the supply and installation of all 60+ sectional doors and operators across the facility. Each door was specified to the opening dimensions and operational requirements of its location within the plant, with the counter-weighted configuration applied consistently across all units. Installation was coordinated with the broader construction schedule to ensure doors were in place at the right phase — preventing weather exposure during construction and allowing other trades to complete their work in sequence.

Quality control across a 60-door project at this scale required systematic inspection at each stage: frame alignment, panel installation, hardware torque, operator commissioning, and final operational test. Every door was verified before sign-off, ensuring the plant started production with a full complement of functioning, correctly specified door systems.

Scope: 60+ sectional doors and operators  |  Configuration: Counter-weighted (spring-free) system  |  Application: New automotive manufacturing facility  |  Delivery: New construction phased installation

Outcomes

All doors were delivered and installed on schedule, coordinated with the facility’s construction timeline. The counter-weighted system eliminated the spring failure risk that conventional overhead door setups carry, giving the customer a more reliable long-term operational profile. The plant went into production with a complete, professionally installed door system across every bay — no punch list items, no warranty calls on installation quality.

Why Wilcox

Large-scale new construction door programs require a different capability than single-site service work. Wilcox Door Service has the capacity to manage multi-door projects at industrial scale — coordinating supply, scheduling installations in sequence with the construction program, and maintaining quality control across every unit. When an automotive manufacturer trusts you with 60 doors, you don’t show up with a van and a tape measure. You show up prepared.

The Solution

Wilcox provided Richards-Wilcox sectional doors (made in Mississauga, Canada) to meet their requirements. These sectional doors are polyurethane injected and met the R-Value requirements for the facility. Typically they are installed with springs, but we were able to make the adjustment to utilize a counterweight system. The operators that were used were also a Canadian product; a jackshaft operator made by Micanan (made in Montreal, Canada).
