Six-Type Overhead Door Program — Municipality of Durham Facility

The Challenge

A Municipality of Durham facility required overhead door systems across multiple bays and openings — each with distinct use cases, environmental conditions, and operational requirements. Municipal facilities aren’t one-size-fits-all: car wash bays, vehicle storage areas, maintenance workshops, and utility access points all have different demands on a door system, and specifying the same product for every opening would result in some doors being over-engineered for their application and others failing prematurely under conditions they weren’t designed for.

The project required a contractor who could assess each opening individually, specify the right door type for each unique application, supply multiple product categories, and coordinate installation across a complex multi-bay facility without disrupting the municipality’s operations.

The Solution

Wilcox Door Service supplied and installed six different types of overhead doors across the facility, with each specified for the demands of its individual application:

  • Richards-Wilcox Polytite Sectional Doors — Triple-walled polycarbonate panels for lightweight, easy operation in moisture-heavy environments like car wash bays. Impact-resistant and ideal for spaces with significant water exposure.
  • Insulated Sectional Doors — For vehicle storage and maintenance areas requiring temperature control and energy efficiency through the heating season.
  • High-Speed Doors — For high-traffic access points where cycle speed reduces energy loss and improves operational flow for fleet vehicles.
  • Rolling Steel Doors — For secure utility and storage openings requiring robust, low-maintenance closure with a small overhead footprint.
  • Rubber High-Speed Doors — For areas subject to forklift and vehicle contact, where impact resilience and fast self-recovery are operational priorities.
  • Personnel Doors — For pedestrian access points requiring commercial-grade hardware, security, and durability for daily staff use.

Each door type was assessed, specified, and installed as part of a coordinated project program, ensuring consistent installation quality across all six product categories.

Client: Municipality of Durham  |  Scope: Six door types, multi-bay municipal facility  |  Approach: Application-specific specification for each opening  |  Products: Polytite sectional, insulated sectional, high-speed, rolling steel, rubber, personnel

Outcomes

Every opening in the facility now has a door system matched to its actual use case and environmental demands. The car wash bays have moisture-resistant Polytite doors. The vehicle storage areas have properly insulated sectional doors. High-traffic access points cycle efficiently with high-speed systems. The project was completed on schedule across all six door types, with installation coordinated to minimize disruption to the municipality’s daily operations.

Why Wilcox

Multi-type door programs at complex facilities require a supplier who understands the full product landscape and can match the right door to each specific application. Wilcox Door Service represents multiple leading door brands and product categories, which means we can specify what’s actually right for each opening rather than defaulting to whatever we happen to carry. That breadth of product knowledge, combined with the technical depth to install all of it correctly, is what a project like this requires.
