The Challenge
The Value Village donation drive-up dock in Brampton presented a dock seal challenge that most standard installations don’t face: extreme variability in vehicle size. Unlike a dedicated distribution dock that sees a consistent trailer mix, a donation drop-off dock accommodates everything from compact passenger vehicles to pickup trucks to full-size cargo vans — all backing up to the same dock opening throughout the day.
The existing dock seals had deteriorated to the point where they were no longer providing reliable contact with any vehicle type. Cold air, moisture, and pests were infiltrating through gaps at the dock interface, creating uncomfortable conditions at an already high-traffic public-facing facility. The unique challenge was specifying a replacement that could adapt to the full range of vehicle dimensions without losing seal performance at either extreme.
The Solution
Wilcox Door Service approached this project with the variability challenge front and centre. We specified foam dock seals with padded head and side sections designed to compress and conform across a wide range of vehicle body heights and widths — rather than optimizing for a single trailer profile. Foam density selection balanced compliance (to seal against smaller, lighter vehicles) with durability (to handle the volume of daily contact without premature compression).
The material and fabric grade were also chosen with the public-facing environment in mind. This dock sees high-frequency use from members of the public, not trained dock operators — so the seals needed to be robust enough to handle non-standard approaches and contact angles without degrading rapidly. Installation was completed cleanly and efficiently, restoring the dock interface without disrupting donation drop-off operations.
Outcomes
The new dock seals effectively accommodate the full range of vehicle types that use the Value Village donation dock. Cold air, moisture, and pest infiltration through the dock interface have been significantly reduced, improving conditions inside the donation receiving area. Staff working at the dock reported a noticeable improvement in comfort, particularly during the colder months.
The seals have also shown strong durability under high-frequency public use — holding up well to the non-standard vehicle approaches and varied contact points that are part of everyday operations at this type of facility.
